Hypericum is a shrub plant of European origin from the hypericaceae family, the most abundant species in this family. Its name comes from the property that was attributed to this herb to make evil spirits and apparitions flee. Flowers used to be hung over religious icons on Saint John's Day.
The active part of this shrub are the flowering tops, which contain naphthodianthrones, mainly hypericin, pseudohypericin and isohypericin, the first being the most active, and of which it is standardized. It also contains flavonoids, bisflavones, caffeic acid derivatives, proanthocyanidols, phytosterols, hyperforin, and coumarins, among others.
