Cascara sagrada is a natural plant of the American continent and belongs to the Rhamnaceae family. Its name comes from the false belief that this plant was really a tree and that its bark had been used for the manufacture of Noah's Ark.
The active part of this plant is precisely its bark, which is very rich in hydroxyanthracene heterosides, mainly glucosilantrones and glucosides. Among these, the cascarósidos, substances with a physiological action, stand out. It also contains anthraquinones and anthrones.
Properties
Traditionally, cascara sagrada has been used as a short-term laxative (in cases of occasional constipation). Its action lies in the ability of these substances to modify their structure in the large intestine thanks to the breakdown of the molecules and the action exerted by the intestinal flora in the area.
This metabolic action favors an increase in peristaltic movement (typical of the gut) and a greater secretion of water and electrolytes from the mucosa to the outside, favoring evacuation.
Main indications
Occasional constipation
